How to Prepare for Septic Tank Cleaning

Paying a contractor to come out and pump your tank which is only half full is a complete waste of time and money. So if you can determine how often your septic tank needs emptying, you will be in a better position to schedule your next appointment. A tank is full when the sludge is around 12 inches below the exit pipe.

1. Before your contractor starts to pump out your tank, ask them to first measure the depth of sludge and scum.

2. Take note of the depths of each layer and when your tank was cleaned last.

3. This will let you know how long your tank takes to reach its current depth, meaning you are in a better position to calculate roughly when it is going to be full again.
